Omalo is the administrative center of Tusheti region. It belongs to the Akhmeta Municipality and is laid out on the right bank of the river Pirikita Alazani, at 1,880 meters above sea level. Many hiking and horseback riding trails start from Omalo. Due to the heavy snow, the roads to Tusheti are closed in winter. Consequently, the region has no communication to the rest of the country for at least six months. Tushs travel to lowlands and settle in the villages of Upper and Lower Alvani in winter. They return to Tusheti only in summer.
